Step 1

Make a cross-cut incision about 10 cm long in the grow kit. Remove all plastic film around the cut before placing the kit in the mushroom tank.
Step 2

Open the top of the water tank and fill with clean water to the scale line.
Step 3

Press the top to open the Box, then place the mushroom bag in the tank with its opening facing outward.
Step 4

Start the Box from the digital display panel.

How long until my first harvest with the Smart Mushroom Growing Box?

Most growers see their first harvest 7–14 days after placing a ready-to-fruit block in the box, depending on the variety. Fast oyster varieties sit at the quicker end of that range, while shiitake can take longer. The box works with any pre-inoculated grow kit or fruiting block, sold separately.

What mushroom varieties can I grow in it?

Oyster varieties (blue, pink and golden), shiitake, lion's mane and reishi can all be grown in the box. Founder Laszlo Bulatko has personally grown oyster varieties and shiitake in it. The box displays but doesn't control temperature, so keep it in a room between 10–30 °C — see our reishi growing guide and the other species guides for variety-specific tips.

Does it need a separate humidifier or fan?

No — both are built in. A sensor drives the humidifier automatically: it runs continuously below 72% RH, pulses for 30 seconds every 5 minutes between 76–80%, and switches off above 80%. A separate fan handles fresh-air exchange on a programmed cycle, and the unit runs very quietly.

How many harvests will I get from one fruiting block?

Where do you ship the Smart Mushroom Growing Box?

Australia-wide. Orders are dispatched from our Queensland warehouse within 24–48 hours (Monday–Friday); standard delivery takes 3–7 business days, and regional and Western Australia deliveries can take up to 10.

How do mushrooms actually grow inside the box?

You place a fully colonised fruiting block inside, and the box maintains the high humidity, fresh air and light that trigger the block to 'pin' — form baby mushrooms — and fruit to full size. You watch the live display, top up the water reservoir roughly every 5–7 days, and harvest.

Does it come with mushroom spawn or a grow kit?

No — the Smart Mushroom Growing Box is the growing machine only. You add a pre-inoculated grow kit or fruiting block, widely available from Australian mushroom suppliers online. That keeps you free to grow any compatible species you like, batch after batch.

Is it safe to grow mushrooms indoors with the box?

The box is an enclosed chamber, and its fresh-air fan works through a cotton filter that helps limit spore spread — a common concern with open-air setups, especially for oyster varieties. It runs on low-power USB. As with any mushroom growing, people sensitive to spores should harvest before the caps fully mature.

Can I freeze the mushrooms I harvest?

Yes — for best results, sauté or blanch them first, then freeze in airtight containers; cooked mushrooms keep their texture far better than raw-frozen ones. Fresh mushrooms are best used within about a week in the fridge.

How is it different from a cheap grow kit or a monotub?

A typical $20–40 grow kit is a one-off: you mist it by hand and it's spent after a few flushes. The box is a reusable machine — it automates the humidity, fresh air and lighting around every block you ever put in it, removing the daily misting routine and the guesswork. How much electricity does it use?

Very little — it runs entirely over USB, the same low-power connection a phone charger uses. The USB-A to USB-C cable is included; a wall adapter isn't, and standard USB power adapters work.

What's included in the box, and what do I need to buy separately?

In the box: the growing machine, a USB-A to USB-C cable, an instruction manual and a spare humidifier wick. Not included: a USB wall adapter, and the grow kit or fruiting block itself — you supply those, with blocks widely available from Australian mushroom suppliers online.

My block is bigger than 1.2 kg — can I still use it?

Yes, with a trick founder Laszlo Bulatko tested himself: he cut a 2.2 kg shiitake block in half, fruited one half in the box (it takes blocks from roughly 700 g to 1.2 kg), and kept the other half resting in the fridge, then swapped them after harvest. Both halves produced harvests.

How does the Smart Mushroom Growing Box work?
