FAQs
What is a microgreen?
A microgreen is the tender first growth of a vegetable or herb — picked roughly 7 to 14 days after sowing, just as the first true leaves unfurl. It sits between a sprout and a baby-leaf salad, and the whole seedling (stem and leaf) goes on your plate. Favourites to grow include broccoli, radish, sunflower, pea and mustard.
How do you grow microgreens at home?
Sow seeds thickly across a damp grow mat, cover with the dome to hold in darkness and humidity for the first 3 to 5 days, then lift the dome, switch on the light and let them green up over the next 4 to 9 days before cutting. With the Wooden Smart Microgreen Kit the reservoir waters them for you and the timed LED runs the light cycle, so there's nothing to remember day to day.
What's included in the kit?
Your Wooden kit arrives with the wood-grain base and its built-in self-watering reservoir, the lift-out inner growing basket, the timer-controlled full-spectrum LED, a blackout germination dome, biodegradable transplant bags and 2 starter grow mats. Seeds are the only thing you bring.
Do I need special seeds, and where do I buy microgreen seeds in Australia?
There's no proprietary seed — any untreated microgreen or sprouting seed grows happily. The kit is the growing device, and you buy seed separately from an Australian supplier such as Green Harvest, The Seed Collection or Mr Fothergill's. Our free growing guides below match varieties to sowing density and harvest times.
How long do microgreens take to grow?
Expect a harvest in roughly 7 to 14 days: quicker crops like radish and broccoli are usually cut around day 7 to 10, while sunflower and pea take closer to 10 to 14. A full tray gives you about 80 to 120 grams each time.
Are the growing mats reusable, and how many come with the kit?
Two starter mats are included to get you going. Each fibre mat is used once per crop — once you've harvested, toss the spent mat, rinse the basket and slot in a fresh one. When the starters run out, a 10-pack of Germinating Growing Mats ($14.90) keeps you growing at about $1.49 a crop.
Is it hard to set up?
Not at all. Drop a mat into the basket, sprinkle on your seeds, top up the reservoir and pop the dome on top — you're done in a few minutes. All it needs is a power point; there's no soil, no plumbing and no daily watering to keep up with.
How much does it add to my electricity bill?
Hardly anything. The LED is low-energy and only runs on its timed cycle rather than around the clock, so the running cost is small — well below what you'd spend buying punnets of microgreens at the shops.
Can you eat microgreen roots?
Roots are edible in theory, but most growers don't bother — you snip the stems just above the mat so the harvest stays clean and grit-free. The lift-out basket then takes the whole root mat away in one go.
Who makes the LaNiTex Smart Microgreen Kit?
The kit comes from LaNiTex Hydro Garden — LaNiTex Australia Pty Ltd (ABN 47 682 768 967) — an Australian business founded by Laszlo Bulatko in Sippy Downs, Queensland. Every kit is tested before it's listed, carries a 1-year warranty and ships Australia-wide.
Which microgreen is the healthiest?
Gram for gram, microgreens often carry more nutrients than the full-grown vegetable. Red cabbage, broccoli and radish tend to top the nutrient charts, while pea and sunflower lean higher in protein. Since they all thrive in the kit, the easiest approach is to rotate varieties through the year.
Which microgreen seeds need soaking before sowing?
Give the bigger seeds — sunflower, pea and chickpea — an 8 to 12 hour soak before they go on the mat. Small seeds such as broccoli, radish, mustard and kale don't need it; soaking just makes them clump together.
How many microgreen seeds do I use per tray?
A rough guide is 1 to 2 tablespoons spread evenly so the seeds sit shoulder to shoulder without piling up. Fine seeds like broccoli and radish can go on densely, while chunkier seeds such as sunflower and pea want a little more room.
How long do microgreen seeds last?
Kept sealed somewhere cool and dry, most microgreen seed stays viable for around 2 to 5 years. For the strongest germination, buy in amounts you'll get through within a year or two.
Are microgreens good for you?
Very — they pack a concentrated hit of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants into a small leaf, plus fresh flavour and crunch. Growing them at home means you can cut them minutes before they reach the plate, at their freshest.
