Turn your kitchen counter into a year-round microgreen garden. The LaNiTex Smart Microgreen Growing Kit (Black Metal) is a self-watering microgreen growing kit that grows fresh, nutrient-dense microgreens — broccoli, radish, sunflower, pea and more — in about 7 to 14 days, with a timed full-spectrum LED doing the work for you. It works just as well as a micro herbs growing kit: the same kit raises the herb microgreens known as micro herbs, like basil and coriander, for fresh kitchen garnish. Comparing microgreen kits in Australia? This black metal kit is our best seller — the same growing engine as the wooden version, at a lower price.

Microgreens are harvested young, at the seedling stage, which is when they are most nutrient-dense — research assessing 25 varieties found they generally carry higher levels of vitamins and carotenoids than the same crops grown to maturity (USDA / University of Maryland research, Xiao et al. 2012).

In a nutshell: The LaNiTex Smart Microgreen Kit is a reusable, self-watering countertop microgreen growing kit — a hydroponic grower that produces a tray of fresh microgreens in 7–14 days using a soil-free fibre mat and an automatic full-spectrum LED. It is growing hardware — you supply your own seeds, backed by a 1-year warranty. Because micro herbs are just herb microgreens, it doubles as a micro herbs kit too.

Why you'll love this countertop microgreen growing kit

    • Fresh microgreens in 7–14 days. A controlled light-and-water environment helps seeds sprout quickly and grow evenly, so you go from sowing to harvest in a week or two.
    • 2-second root cleanup. Lift the removable inner basket and rinse the whole root mass clean in seconds — no soil, no mess.
    • Self-watering reservoir. The reservoir keeps the mat evenly moist and reduces the risk of over- or under-watering, so the kit can look after itself for days.
    • Set-and-forget LED. The full-spectrum LED runs on an automatic daily timer that mimics a natural daylight cycle — no sunny windowsill required.
    • Better germination with the included dome. The blackout germination dome creates a dark, humid microclimate that improves early sprouting.
    • Food-safe and built to last. Made from durable, non-toxic, food-safe materials, with a sleek black metal finish that suits a modern kitchen.

    What's in the box

    • Black metal base with self-watering reservoir
    • Removable inner growing basket (the 2-second root-rinse system)
    • Automatic full-spectrum LED grow light with built-in timer
    • Blackout germination dome
    • Biodegradable transplant bags
    • 2 starter grow mats

The kit includes 2 starter grow mats to get you growing straight away — you just supply your own microgreen seeds. The germinating growing mat is the soil-free growing medium your seeds sit on; restock the 10-pack when your starters run out.

How to grow microgreens in 7–14 days

Five steps from seed to salad in your microgreen growing kit:

    1. Sow — spread seeds evenly across a moist grow mat in the basket and top up the reservoir.
    2. Cover — fit the blackout dome and keep it dark for 3–5 days while the seeds sprout.
    3. Light — remove the dome and switch on the LED; it runs on an automatic daily cycle.
    4. Top up — refill the reservoir every few days; the mat wicks moisture up to the roots.
    5. Harvest — cut just above the mat at 7–10 days (radish, broccoli) or 10–14 days (sunflower, pea). Expect roughly 80–120 g per tray.

We grew several trays in this microgreen growing kit before listing it, so the harvest window and ~80–120 g yield above come from real runs, not guesswork.

Where to get microgreen seeds in Australia

The microgreen growing kit is the hardware — seeds are bought separately. Use any untreated microgreen or sprouting seed from an Australian seed supplier. Not sure which varieties to start with? FAQs

    Are microgreens good for you?

Yes — they're a concentrated source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, and add fresh flavour and crunch. Growing your own means you harvest minutes before eating, at peak freshness.

How long do microgreen seeds last?

Stored cool, dry and sealed, most microgreen seeds stay viable for 2–5 years. Buy quantities you'll use within a year or two for the best germination.

How many microgreen seeds do I use per tray?

As a guide, scatter 1–2 tablespoons of seed evenly so seeds touch but don't stack. Small seeds (broccoli, radish) sow densely; larger seeds (sunflower, pea) need a little more space.

Which microgreen seeds need soaking before sowing?

Soak larger seeds — sunflower, pea and chickpea — for 8–12 hours before sowing. Skip soaking for small seeds like broccoli, radish, mustard and kale, as soaking makes them clump on the mat.

    Which microgreen is the healthiest?

Microgreens can be more nutrient-dense than the mature vegetable. Red cabbage, broccoli and radish are among the most nutrient-rich, while pea and sunflower are higher in protein. All grow well in the LaNiTex kit, so you can rotate varieties.

    What is a microgreen?

Microgreens are young vegetable or herb seedlings, harvested about 7–14 days after sowing once the first true leaves appear — bigger than a sprout, smaller than a baby leaf. You eat the whole thing, stem and leaf. Popular types include broccoli, radish, pea, sunflower and mustard.

How do you grow microgreens at home?

Spread seeds densely on a moist grow mat, keep them dark under the dome for 3–5 days until they sprout, then switch on the LED for another 4–9 days and harvest. The LaNiTex Smart Microgreen Kit automates the watering and the light, so there's no daily watering or guesswork.

    What's included in the kit?

The black metal base with self-watering reservoir, the removable inner growing basket, an automatic full-spectrum LED grow light with timer, a blackout germination dome, biodegradable transplant bags, and 2 starter grow mats. You supply your own seeds.

Do I need special seeds, and where do I buy microgreen seeds in Australia?

No special seeds are needed — any untreated microgreen or sprouting seed works. The kit is the hardware; seeds are bought separately. Australian suppliers include Green Harvest, The Seed Collection. Our free growing guides recommend varieties and timing for each crop.

How long do microgreens take to grow?

Most are ready in 7–14 days — about 7–10 days for radish and broccoli, and 10–14 days for sunflower and pea. Each tray yields roughly 80–120 g per harvest.

Are the growing mats reusable, and how many come with the kit?

The kit comes with 2 starter grow mats. The fibre mats are single-use per crop — after harvest, discard the mat, rinse the basket and drop in a fresh one. Restock with the 10-pack of Germinating Growing Mats ($14.90, about $1.49 a crop) when they run out.

Is it hard to set up?

No. Lay a mat in the basket, scatter seeds, fill the reservoir and fit the dome. Setup takes a few minutes and needs only a power point — no soil, no plumbing, no daily watering.

How much does it add to my electricity bill?

Very little. The full-spectrum LED is energy-efficient and runs on an automatic timer rather than all day, so running costs are low — far less than buying microgreens at the shop.

    Can you eat microgreen roots?

The roots are technically edible but usually aren't eaten — you cut the stems just above the mat, leaving the roots behind for a clean, grit-free harvest. The removable basket lifts the whole root mass out in one piece.

Who makes the LaNiTex Smart Microgreen Kit?

It's sold by LaNiTex Hydro Garden (LaNiTex Australia Pty Ltd, ABN 47 682 768 967), founded by Laszlo Bulatko in Sippy Downs, Queensland. The kit is tested before listing, backed by a 1-year warranty, and ships across Australia.

Can I grow cat grass for my cat?

Yes. Wheatgrass — the grass sold as "cat grass" — is simply a microgreen, so it grows on the very same fibre mats this kit already uses. Scatter wheatgrass seed across a mat, top up the reservoir, switch on the LED, and you'll have a fresh tray of cat grass for your cat to nibble in about a week. It needs no soil and no nutrient — just water — and you can grow a new tray whenever the last one is chewed down.
