FAQs
Are microgreens good for you?
Yes — they're a concentrated source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, and add fresh flavour and crunch. Growing your own means you harvest minutes before eating, at peak freshness.
How long do microgreen seeds last?
Stored cool, dry and sealed, most microgreen seeds stay viable for 2–5 years. Buy quantities you'll use within a year or two for the best germination.
How many microgreen seeds do I use per tray?
As a guide, scatter 1–2 tablespoons of seed evenly so seeds touch but don't stack. Small seeds (broccoli, radish) sow densely; larger seeds (sunflower, pea) need a little more space.
Which microgreen seeds need soaking before sowing?
Soak larger seeds — sunflower, pea and chickpea — for 8–12 hours before sowing. Skip soaking for small seeds like broccoli, radish, mustard and kale, as soaking makes them clump on the mat.
Which microgreen is the healthiest?
Microgreens can be more nutrient-dense than the mature vegetable. Red cabbage, broccoli and radish are among the most nutrient-rich, while pea and sunflower are higher in protein. All grow well in the LaNiTex kit, so you can rotate varieties.
What is a microgreen?
Microgreens are young vegetable or herb seedlings, harvested about 7–14 days after sowing once the first true leaves appear — bigger than a sprout, smaller than a baby leaf. You eat the whole thing, stem and leaf. Popular types include broccoli, radish, pea, sunflower and mustard.
How do you grow microgreens at home?
Spread seeds densely on a moist grow mat, keep them dark under the dome for 3–5 days until they sprout, then switch on the LED for another 4–9 days and harvest. The LaNiTex Smart Microgreen Kit automates the watering and the light, so there's no daily watering or guesswork.
What's included in the kit?
The black metal base with self-watering reservoir, the removable inner growing basket, an automatic full-spectrum LED grow light with timer, a blackout germination dome, biodegradable transplant bags, and 2 starter grow mats. You supply your own seeds.
Do I need special seeds, and where do I buy microgreen seeds in Australia?
No special seeds are needed — any untreated microgreen or sprouting seed works. The kit is the hardware; seeds are bought separately. Australian suppliers include Green Harvest, The Seed Collection. Our free growing guides recommend varieties and timing for each crop.
How long do microgreens take to grow?
Most are ready in 7–14 days — about 7–10 days for radish and broccoli, and 10–14 days for sunflower and pea. Each tray yields roughly 80–120 g per harvest.
Are the growing mats reusable, and how many come with the kit?
The kit comes with 2 starter grow mats. The fibre mats are single-use per crop — after harvest, discard the mat, rinse the basket and drop in a fresh one. Restock with the 10-pack of Germinating Growing Mats ($14.90, about $1.49 a crop) when they run out.
Is it hard to set up?
No. Lay a mat in the basket, scatter seeds, fill the reservoir and fit the dome. Setup takes a few minutes and needs only a power point — no soil, no plumbing, no daily watering.
How much does it add to my electricity bill?
Very little. The full-spectrum LED is energy-efficient and runs on an automatic timer rather than all day, so running costs are low — far less than buying microgreens at the shop.
Can you eat microgreen roots?
The roots are technically edible but usually aren't eaten — you cut the stems just above the mat, leaving the roots behind for a clean, grit-free harvest. The removable basket lifts the whole root mass out in one piece.
Who makes the LaNiTex Smart Microgreen Kit?
It's sold by LaNiTex Hydro Garden (LaNiTex Australia Pty Ltd, ABN 47 682 768 967), founded by Laszlo Bulatko in Sippy Downs, Queensland. The kit is tested before listing, backed by a 1-year warranty, and ships across Australia.
