What is hydroponics?
Hydroponics is growing plants without soil. The roots sit in water instead, and everything the plant would normally pull out of the ground — nitrogen, potassium, calcium, iron and the rest — is dissolved into that water for it. Soil was only ever the delivery system. Take it away, deliver the same things directly, and the plant carries on quite happily.
Indoors, two more jobs come with it. Light, because a kitchen window will not carry a lettuce through an Australian winter, so a grow light stands in for the sun on a fixed daily cycle. And air at the roots, because roots sitting in still water drown. That is what the quiet pump in the base of a home system is doing: keeping the water moving so oxygen keeps reaching the roots.
That is the whole idea. The rest is routine — topping up water, adding nutrient, keeping the light on a sensible schedule, and picking leaves before they get tired. The guides below take those one at a time, in the order you actually meet them.

What do seeds need to germinate?
Less than most people expect: moisture, warmth and air. Not light, and not nutrient — a seed carries its own food, which is why germination happens just as well in a folded damp paper towel as anywhere else. Light and feeding start to matter once the first true leaves appear. Keep the towel or sponge damp rather than wet: a seed sitting in standing water suffocates before it sprouts.
How long do seeds take to germinate?
It depends far more on the plant than on the method. Fast leafy greens and most herbs show a white root tip within a few days; slower seeds, and anything with a hard shell, can take a week or more. Warmth is the biggest lever — a cold room stretches everything out. If nothing has moved after two weeks, the seed was almost certainly too old rather than badly treated.
What can be grown in hydroponics?
Indoors, the reliable performers are leafy greens and herbs: lettuce, spinach, rocket, Asian greens, basil, mint, coriander. They grow fast, stay small, and you eat the part that grows. Fruiting crops such as tomatoes, chillies and strawberries also work, but they need more headroom, a longer run and hand pollination indoors. What are micronutrients?
The elements a plant needs in tiny amounts — iron, manganese, zinc, boron, copper, molybdenum — as opposed to the macronutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) it needs in bulk. Small does not mean optional: a plant short of iron yellows between the leaf veins while everything else looks fine. A proper two-part hydroponic nutrient already contains the full set, which is why home-brew fertiliser mixes tend to disappoint.
