What is actually in hydroponic nutrient solution?

In short, a hydroponic nutrient solution is water with plant salts dissolved in it. The NSW Department of Primary Industries defines it in its 2011 guide to leafy Asian vegetables, still the standard reference: "This is the solution used in the hydroponic system that provides water and nutrients to the plants. It is made by mixing water with the stock solutions."

So what are hydroponic nutrients made of? Named salts. The 2011 recipe lists calcium nitrate and iron chelate in the A bottle, then potassium nitrate, monopotassium phosphate, magnesium sulphate, boric acid and trace zinc, manganese, copper and molybdenum salts in the B bottle. That means the hydroponic nutrient solution ingredients read like a fertiliser bag.

But why two bottles? Because the neat A and B would ruin each other in one jug: "two different stock solutions (labelled A and B), are required to avoid precipitation of calcium phosphate, calcium sulphate and iron phosphate in these highly concentrated solutions. The stock solutions are 100 to 200 times stronger than the solution given to plants."

So is it just chemicals?

Yes, in the same sense that soil is chemicals. In fact roots cannot absorb compost directly, because soil microbes break it into plant salts first. As the 2011 DPI guide puts it: "The nutrients are present in solution as either positive or negative ions". So hydroponics skips that step and serves the ions ready-made.

Everyone says hydroponics is chemical-heavy. Fair point. Then you read the label: calcium nitrate is the same calcium that ends up in a soil-grown carrot. Still, the word chemical does the fear-work here, and it fits garden fertiliser just as neatly. And NPK on a hydroponic label means the same three numbers as it does on that bag.

Feeding roots this way is not new. The 2011 NSW DPI fertigation guide notes: "The supply of dissolved mineral nutrients to plant roots has been a research tool for at least 100 years." Even so, organic growers will object, and fairly: certified organic systems feed the soil, not the plant.

What I learned handling nutrient solutions at home

What are the real risks worth respecting?

The risk lives in the neat bottles, not in the tank. At 100 to 200 times working strength, A and B sting eyes and skin, and nobody should swallow them. But once they go into the reservoir, the same liquid is a weak salt mix.

Strong hydroponic nutrients belong on a high shelf or in a locked cupboard, in their labelled bottles, away from children, pets and food. Never mix the two neat: A and B react and drop out as solid calcium phosphate and calcium sulphate, so the product is wasted and a pump can block. Instead, add each bottle to water one at a time, stirring as you go, and never pour water into the neat liquid. Then rinse splashes off skin with plenty of clean water straight away, and get medical advice for a splash in the eye. Gloves are sensible without being essential once the mix is watered down. On the other hand, the trap is pouring neat liquid into a drink bottle with no label, which turns a well-behaved garden product into a real hazard in a kitchen where children help.

What is not in the bottle matters too: no pesticides, no herbicides, no growth hormones. Even so, one warning applies, from the 2011 DPI guide: "Avoid fertilisers that contain urea, or those that have over 10% of total nitrogen in the ammonium form."

The name on the bottle carries weight as well. Nutrient makers grade the raw minerals they buy, and a reputable maker will show a certificate of analysis for its mix on request. Fair reason to pick a known brand over the cheapest bottle online. On the same logic, mix and store only in food-safe containers, because a repurposed chemical drum has no place near a food crop.

Is hydroponic produce safe to eat?

Yes. Lettuce grown in a hydroponic nutrient solution is food, and it earns its place on the plate the same way any vegetable does. Roots take up nitrogen as nitrate whether the source was compost or a bottle.

Sustainable Gardening Australia notes that hydroponic produce needs fewer pesticide and herbicide sprays, and that hydroponic farms can use up to 90 per cent less water. So behind a door there are fewer pests to spray for.

Wash it anyway. But to be honest about the limits: growing method is not a health claim, so nobody should say hydroponic greens are better for you.

How do you mix and store it safely?

Mixing nutrient solution for hydroponics is a five-step routine, about three minutes.

  1. First, fill the reservoir with water, never the reverse.
  2. Then add bottle A, stir, add bottle B, stir again.
  3. Next, check EC and pH against the label dose.
  4. Also label the mixing jug and keep it out of the kitchen.
  5. Finally, cap both bottles and wash your hands.

Ordinary tap water suits most Australian homes; skip water from a softener, because it carries added sodium. And never mix stronger than the label dose, because stronger is not faster: overfed roots burn in hydro just as they do in a pot. A little also goes a long way here: the neat bottles dilute 100 to 200 times, so a small pair of bottles covers many tank refills.

Mixed solution is best used fresh, and most home growers replace it within a few weeks, sooner in warm weather, because the balance drifts. Plants draw water and salts at different rates, so the mix changes while the tank looks full. So top up with plain water, then replace the lot.

Do hydroponic nutrients expire?

Sealed bottles carry a printed expiry date, and they last well stored cool, dark and upright. Age shows as crystals on the bottom or a shift in colour. Still, a bottle that has frozen or sat open is worth replacing.

Can you use hydroponic nutrients in soil?
