The LaNiTex Grow Box Tall is a hydroponic system for tomatoes, capsicum, cucumbers, chillies and other fruiting crops. It pairs 15 planting sites and a 9-litre reservoir with the two things fruiting plants actually need indoors: headroom under a raised full-spectrum LED and a built-in plant-support trellis.

Leafy greens are easy; fruit is where most benchtop gardens give up. The Tall version raises the light on an extended frame, 74.6 cm top to bottom, and backs it with a stronger LED that draws up to 90 watts, so flowering and fruit set get the light intensity they need. Compact and cherry tomato varieties, capsicum, chillies and cucumbers are the sweet spot.

The Trellis Does the Heavy Lifting

Twelve plant-holding racks clip onto short, middle and long rods across the frame. When a tomato or cucumber reaches 20 to 30 cm, you guide it through the racks and the frame carries the weight, so there are no stakes, no cages and no tipping pots.

From Seed to Fruit, the Kit Has It Covered

Six grow domes hold humidity over seedlings while they establish. Nine shading hoods cover vacant planting sites so light mostly stays out of the water and algae growth is greatly reduced; a quick tank check every week or two keeps it clear. An insufficient-water alert flashes on the control button when the nutrient solution runs low, which matters once thirsty fruiting plants start drinking seriously. Planting, Step by Step

The manual keeps the first planting simple, and it takes well under an hour:

  1. Push a cotton wick up through the base of each planting basket, leaving about 5 mm showing at the top.
  2. Soak the grow medium in clean water and squeeze it gently so it wets right through.
  3. Sit the wet medium in its planting cup so it presses firmly against the wick, then close the lid until it clicks.
  4. Drop two seeds into each well and slide the cup anticlockwise into the planting panel.
  5. Cover each planted site with a grow dome. Seedlings run on clean, low-mineral water (filtered tap or rainwater); hold the nutrients back until the domes come off.
  6. Once seedlings establish, add 4 litres of water mixed with 40 ml of solution A, then another 4 litres with 40 ml of solution B, until the level passes the green water line inside the tank.
  7. From there, check once a week and top up to the green line; the control button flashes when the solution runs low.

Automated Care While the Fruit Sets

One press starts the cycle: 14 hours of light, 10 hours of sleep, repeated daily, with the pump feeding roots on its own schedule. There is no app to pair and no schedule to program; one button runs the whole thing. Which Crops Grow Best in the Grow Box Tall?

Choose dwarf, patio or cherry tomato varieties rather than full-size vines; a 74.6 cm unit rewards compact growers. Capsicum, chillies and eggplant suit the trellis well, and as a hydroponic system for cucumbers it keeps up just as well: start growing cucumbers from two seeds per pot across six pots, then keep the two strongest plants once flowering begins, as the manual recommends. Early on, you can run leafy greens in the spare sites while the fruiting plants size up. Just want herbs or a first try? The compact Desktop Grow Box is a smaller way in.

Capsicum and chillies arguably get the best of it here: the stronger LED drives flower set, and the racks carry branches that would otherwise snap under a heavy crop. Climbing beans take to the trellis naturally, and taller flowers such as zinnias and dwarf sunflowers bloom comfortably under the raised light. Anything that tops out around 70 cm is fair game.
