My experience growing leeks on the Sunshine Coast

- Nutrient deficiency: pale or striped leaves often mean iron or nitrogen lock-out from pH drift. Reset pH to 6.0-6.5 and the colour usually returns.
- Bolting: triggered by a cold snap. Keep the room steady inside the 13-24 C band.
- Heat stress: above 24 C, growth slows and plants soften. Cool the room or shift to the cooler months.
- Pythium (root rot): the main recirculating-system risk - slimy, brown roots. Keep solution cool and oxygenated, and sanitise between crops.
- Thrips and rust: thrips scar the leaves; rust shows as orange pustules. Indoors, good hygiene and airflow keep both rare - inspect weekly and remove affected leaves early.
