What is a growing medium and why does hydroponics still need one?
A growing medium is the material that sits where soil would sit. The medium anchors roots, holds a film of water, and keeps air pockets open. So it copies soil without dirt.
Roots need water and oxygen together, and that is the whole tension. A medium holding plenty of water leaves less room for air. On the other hand, a fast-draining medium holds more air but dries sooner. In practice, every hydroponics growing medium sits on that dial.
That means the honest answer to "which is best" is never one product. Instead, the right medium follows how often water reaches your roots. So a timer-fed pump suits an airy medium. But a pot you water twice a week needs one that holds moisture.
The medium controls water and air, not nutrition. Feeding comes from the solution you mix.
How do you choose the right growing medium?
Choosing growing media for hydroponics comes down to four questions. What system are you running? How often can you check the water? Are you raising seedlings or finishing full plants? And will you reuse the medium or bin it?
The system question does most of the work. A machine with a pump waters on a schedule, so the medium stays airy. But a hand-watered pot has no schedule, so the medium stores water.
Then comes the seedling question. For example, young roots want something soft to push through, while full plants want grip. And reuse is the last filter, because some materials wash clean and others hold salts.

What I have learned about growing media on the Sunshine Coast

Rockwool, sponge or coco: the big three compared
Rockwool cubes, grow sponges and coco coir are the three media a beginner chooses between. So here is what each is, when to use it, and what goes wrong.
Rockwool cubes
Rockwool is spun basalt rock, melted into fibres and pressed into cubes. The fibres hold water and air at once, and that means propagators have kept using it for decades. So treat it as a seed-raising medium first.
Pre-soak the cube before a seed goes near it. Fresh rockwool is alkaline, so soak cubes in pH-adjusted water, then let them drip. But do not squeeze a soaked cube. Squeezing collapses the fibres and crushes the air pockets roots need.
How wet is right? The cube should feel heavy and damp, and a light shake should throw no drops. Also, rockwool at home is single-use, because sterilising a cube is more work.
Grow sponges and seed pods
Grow sponges are soft foam plugs with a slit in the top, and most smart gardens ship with them. For example, the Smart Grow Box comes with planting sponges, baskets and substrate cups, in 15-hole and 67-hole versions. And the V5.2-A tower includes 400 planting sponges and 160 net cups.
So reach for sponges when the machine controls the water. The pump handles moisture, and the sponge holds the seedling. Then watch the fit, because a sponge sitting proud of its basket wicks water to the stem and invites rot. However, the Desktop Grow Box takes standard sponges, sold separately.
Coco coir
Coco coir is the fibrous husk of a coconut, washed, dried and graded. Coco peat is the fine, soil-like grade of that same husk, so the two names describe one material at different particle sizes. For example, coarse chips drain hard while fine peat holds water like potting mix. Most coir sells as a compressed coco coir brick that swells to several times its size after a soak in water.
So choose coir when watering is manual, because a coir pot forgives a missed top-up. But buy it buffered, because raw coir grabs calcium and magnesium from your solution. That means coir is not a fully inert growing medium. Most media hold nothing back, while coir holds and swaps nutrients, which is why you buffer it. Then it can go again after a flush, though it holds less air.
Sponges for machines, rockwool for propagation, coir for pots. Get that split right.

What about perlite, vermiculite, clay balls and the rest?
Perlite, vermiculite, clay pebbles, peat moss and pumice are the supporting cast. So treat this as a blending guide.
Perlite
Perlite is volcanic glass popped with heat into white granules. In practice, perlite adds air and drains fast, so it is the standard partner for coir. A peer-reviewed Frontiers in Horticulture review from May 2026 found supply is no constraint: "There is no current limit on the supply for such a quantity of perlite as the natural reserves are ample". But wet the bag first, because perlite dust is unpleasant to breathe.
Vermiculite
Vermiculite is a mica mineral that expands into soft, spongy flakes. Vermiculite does the opposite job to perlite, because it holds water and compacts over time. So the two get confused constantly. However, Australian horticultural vermiculite today is a mined mineral, not the asbestos-contaminated insulation from one historic mine.
LECA and clay pebbles
LECA stands for lightweight expanded clay aggregate, sold as clay balls, clay pebbles or hydroton. Fired clay balls are inert and mostly air space, which suits flood-and-drain beds, net cups and deep water culture. But rinse them first, because new pebbles carry dust that clogs a pump. Then wash and reuse them.
Peat moss
Peat moss is partly decomposed sphagnum from bogs. Peat holds water beautifully, however slow renewal has pushed growers toward coir and wood fibre. A 2022 Hort Innovation review of Australian berry substrates backs wood fibre: "wood-fibre is likely to be cost-competitive when compared to coir assuming yield performance and durability as well as management of spent substrate are equivalent to coir". And coir has its own ceiling, because the 2026 Frontiers study puts potential coir availability in 2050 at roughly 64 Mm3.
Pumice
Pumice is volcanic rock, heavier than perlite and slower to break down. Also, pumice adds air without floating to the top when you water. So use it where the pot gets moved.
A handful of other materials show up in Australian shops and grower forums. Oasis cubes are floral-style foam starter blocks, a rockwool alternative for cuttings. Growstones are a porous aggregate made from recycled glass.
Rice hulls are a cheap, compostable blending material that breaks down over a season. Composted pine bark suits larger pots, and washed sand or gravel still works the way it did decades ago, just heavy. So none of them beats the big three for a first system.
And some setups skip the medium, because a DIY Kratky jar needs only a net cup and a collar.
Blends beat single materials in anything you water by hand. Coir plus perlite is the classic start. A common starting blend is roughly 70% coir to 30% perlite, and you add more perlite the more often you water.

Reuse economics are simple. For example, clay pebbles and pumice are one-off buys you wash between crops. Cleaning them is simple too: pull out the old roots, rinse in hot water until it runs clear, and skip harsh bleach. Coir sits in the middle, because a flush buys another run. But sponges, rockwool and vermiculite are consumables, so budget for them like seed.
Salt buildup is what kills a reused medium. Nutrient solution leaves mineral residue as water evaporates, and that means it climbs with every top-up. So flush with plain water before a new crop, and flush a coir pot mid-crop if white crust appears.

Sustainable Gardening Australia notes that "Farms utilizing hydroponics use up to 90 percent less water" than field growing, and the medium is why: an inert material holds a film of solution at the roots and returns the rest to the tank. What are the most common growing medium mistakes?
Three mistakes cause most first-season failures, and all three come back to water. So fix them and a beginner setup runs itself.
The first is a permanently soaked sponge or cube. Roots that never meet air suffocate, and the plant stalls without looking dry. So let the medium breathe, and never leave a sponge basket in standing water.
The second is skipping the wash. In practice, unrinsed clay pebbles shed dust into a pump, and unbuffered coir strips calcium and magnesium from fresh solution. Then the leaves yellow and the grower blames the nutrients.
The third is the wrong medium for the system. For example, vermiculite alone in a deep water culture bucket turns to sludge. And pure perlite in a hand-watered pot dries out fast. So check the matching table before you buy.
When a plant sulks, look at the medium before the nutrients. Water and air problems look exactly like feeding problems.
