Planting procedure: from seed to first harvest

Setting up the Z 2.4 takes under 15 minutes:

  9. Check the water level every 3-5 days and refill using the same formula.
  10. At the 4-6 leaf stage, thin to the single strongest seedling and raise the LED rod gradually to match plant height.

Troubleshooting common problems

Green algae on the reservoir walls. Algae grows when light reaches the water. The Z 2.4's reservoir is opaque, but light can sneak in through the inlet hole and the wick channel. If you see green build-up, cover the inlet with a small piece of opaque tape between refills. Clean the reservoir with a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution (3% H₂O₂, 1:10 with water) every 4–6 weeks.

LED not lighting up after pressing the button. Check both ends of the Type-C cable — it's power-only, so any USB-C adapter at 5V/1A or higher will work. If everything's seated correctly, try pressing and holding the button for 3 seconds instead of a quick tap. The unit cycles through four modes on each press. If it's already in Night Light (the dim setting), one more press turns it off.

Seeds not germinating after 10+ days. Usually it's one of two things: the substrate dried out, or the seeds are old stock. Check that the wick is fully submerged when you fill to 500 mL. Keep the nursery cover on until you see the first sprout — it holds humidity in. If the substrate keeps drying out between checks, increase your refill frequency.

Leaves turning yellow after 3–4 weeks. Usually a nutrient ratio issue. Add Nutrient A and Nutrient B separately with water between them — mixing A and B directly causes precipitation and the plant can't absorb the iron. If the formula is correct and yellowing continues, the plant may be entering its natural end-of-cycle; trim back hard and start a new seed cycle.

Brown, slimy roots (root rot). Healthy roots are white or cream-coloured and firm. If yours look brown and slimy, the water has gone anaerobic — usually from overfilling (the roots need air above the waterline) or a reservoir that's been left too long without a clean. Let the level drop to the minimum before refilling, then clean the whole reservoir with the H₂O₂ solution above.
