Recently I installed a V5.2-A for a doctor couple in Brisbane. They had been chasing this for years. Their reason was simple: vegetables picked fresh from the kitchen taste completely different from anything on a supermarket shelf, and that is what they had been after.
If you live in an apartment in Brisbane or anywhere on the Sunshine Coast, you have probably searched "grow tower" and landed on a Vertigro or a Tower Garden. Big freestanding kit, $1,000 to $2,500. Floor space you may not have. Here is what actually works in an Australian apartment.
What is a grow tower system
A grow tower is a vertical hydroponic system where plants grow in stacked or column-arranged pots, fed by a pump that circulates water and nutrients up through the structure. Aeroponic versions mist the roots; hydroponic ones bathe them. Both skip soil entirely.
The promise is yield per square metre. A traditional soil garden uses one row to one row. A tower stacks the same crop vertically, so you get several times the harvest in the same floor footprint. Most freestanding towers in Australia run between 28 and 50 plant slots and sit 1.5 to 1.8 metres tall.
Apartment buyers care about this because floor space is the constraint. The Australian Bureau of Statistics' 2021 Census found that of all Australian dwellings, "70 per cent were separate houses, 13 per cent were townhouses and 16 per cent were apartments". The apartment share is higher in Brisbane and on the Sunshine Coast. Most apartment kitchens do not have a half-metre patch of free floor.
Why apartments need a different approach
Apartments need a different setup because most freestanding towers are built for floor space and ceiling height a unit simply does not have. I get the same question every week from renters: will it fit on a 60cm bench. Fair point.
Most freestanding grow towers will not. They need floor space, ceiling clearance for a 1.8 metre column, and a power point near a footprint that was not planned for a planter. I almost bought a 1.8 metre tower for the Wurtulla unit I rented a few years ago. Lucky I measured the ceiling fan first. It cleared the floor by 2.1 metres, which left maybe 30cm of clearance for the basil at the top. Every time that fan kicked on through summer, the top tray would have ended up shredded. Most webshops do not warn about that.
Body corp adds another layer. Some Queensland strata schemes ban anything that drops water on a balcony. Others ban anything visible from the street. A grow tower outside on a balcony is often a no-go. Indoor placement is the only path, which means the unit has to share the kitchen, study, or living room with everything else.
There is also water. Sustainable Gardening Australia notes that hydroponic farms use up to 90 percent less water than soil farms, but the indoor reality is different. A 28-pot tower sloshes 60 to 80 litres of nutrient solution. If it leaks, it leaks onto your floor.
Two cheap habits save your floor and your bond. Stand any indoor unit in a shallow waterproof tray, so a drip or an overflow has somewhere to go, and keep it on a hard floor rather than carpet. Weight matters too. Water runs about a kilogram a litre, so a full 60 to 80 litre reservoir adds 60 to 80 kilograms once you count the frame and plants. That is fine on a concrete slab, but worth a second thought on an older timber balcony.
The good news: if you size down or change format, indoor growing in a unit is solvable.

If you are handy, you can build a DIY tower from PVC pipe and a pond pump for around $150, and plenty of guides walk you through it. The trade-off is your time, the fiddly job of drilling watering holes that do not leak, and no support when a part fails. A ready-made box costs more up front but arrives sealed, lit and ready to plant, and that is usually the better deal in an apartment, where a leak is your landlord's problem and not just yours.

The format matters less than matching the crop to a small indoor system. The plants that do best in a grow tower or a stacked Grow Box are the fast, shallow-rooted ones: leafy greens like lettuce, spinach, rocket and Asian greens; herbs like basil, coriander, parsley and mint; and microgreens when you want a harvest in a fortnight. Strawberries also do well in a vertical setup and earn their spot near a bright window.
The crops to skip indoors are the heavy fruiters: full-size tomatoes, capsicums and cucumbers. They grow tall, get top-heavy, and want more light and root volume than a compact apartment unit can give. Leave those for a balcony pot or a backyard bed, and let the tower do what it is best at: a steady supply of greens and herbs within arm's reach of the kitchen.
Lighting: the part apartments get wrong
Outdoors, a tower lives on sunlight. Indoors, an apartment rarely hands a crop the six-plus hours of direct light it wants, so light is what makes or breaks the whole thing. A bright north-facing window will carry low-light herbs like mint and parsley, but lettuce and most greens stretch and go pale without more.
So you run an LED grow light, 14 to 16 hours a day on a timer, depending on the crop. It is the same catch with a tall imported tower: all those plant slots are only worth as much as the light reaching the bottom ones.
Feeding and looking after your system
Caring for a grow tower takes about five minutes a week. Hydroponics swaps soil for a nutrient solution, so a little routine keeps it healthy. Mix the nutrient to the label rate and keep the water slightly acidic. A pH of around 5.5 to 6.5 suits most leafy greens and lets the roots take up what they need. Top up the reservoir as the plants drink it down, and refresh the whole solution every two to three weeks so mineral salts do not build up.
Beyond that, the weekly rhythm is light: check the water level, glance over the plants, and rinse the pump filter if the flow drops. Every two to three weeks, refresh the nutrient mix and look the system over for any blockages. What to look for before you buy
What I run through with apartment buyers before they pick a system, in this order:
- Footprint, not height. Measure the floor patch first. A 30cm by 30cm footprint can take a Mini Grow Pot or two stacked Grow Boxes. A 60cm by 60cm patch can take a single V5.2-A. Anything bigger probably will not suit a unit kitchen.
- Plant capacity vs your actual eating. A household of two eats roughly 6 lettuce heads a fortnight. A single Grow Box delivers that. A 72-slot V5.2-A is overkill for two people unless you are also growing herbs and microgreens.
- Sensors and automation. Renters move. The unit you set up next month may need to come with you in two years. Smart sensors are worth the premium because they remove the daily-check burden. Otherwise you forget to top up the water and a week later the plants are dead.

Don't start with the biggest freestanding tower if you do not yet know which crops you will actually eat. It is the most common mistake I see. People buy the biggest unit, hate the maintenance, and abandon it inside three months. Start small. Stack later. That is it.
The apartment grower's decision tree comes down to this. Footprint first, eating habit second, automation third, budget fourth. How does a grow tower system actually work?
A grow tower runs water and nutrients past plant roots without soil, either by aeroponic mist (roots in air, sprayed regularly) or hydroponic flow (roots in a continuous water film). A pump cycles the solution from a reservoir at the base. Most consumer towers also include LED grow lights set to a 14 to 16 hour daily cycle. Plants sit in net pots clipped into the column. Replanting is faster than soil because there is no transplant shock.
What is the difference between a grow tower and a smart hydroponic box?
